Stag Hollow is an Old World-styled vineyard located in the Yamhill-Carlton District (American Viticultural Area (AVA)) in the northern Willamette Valley, Oregon. Our estate-grown pinot noirs are nurtured on moderately steep south-facing slopes of Willakenzie soils planted at a very high density, producing very intense, rich wine. We are a small, family estate with an unwavering commitment to crafting profound and concentrated wines that express attributes of the vineyard and distinct management practices to enhance wine quality.

Soter Vineyards seeks to develop and operate a world-class winegrowing Estate. We produce certified sustainably-grown fruit, with the aim of crafting singular wines of the highest caliber and distinction.  Our home base is a 245-acre ranch called Mineral Springs, outside of Carlton.  Here the Soter family farms 32 acres of Pinot Noir.  They made their first harvest from the Mineral Springs Vineyard in 2005.

We view Mineral Springs as an ecosystem where we hope to integrate as harmoniously as possible our sustainable vineyard practices with dedicated open space, preserved stands of trees, wildlife corridors and the employment of naturally raised and grass-fed grazing animals.  While we have many goals, such as land management, carbon reduction, soil conservation, healthy and health-promoting animals, we never lose sight of what brought us here: our privileged vineyard site and our desire to work zealously in the pursuit of exceptional Pinot Noir wines.

We are a small, artisanal winery committed to making premium wines in the Willamette Valley handcraft tradition. Since 2001 we’ve had the great fortune to contribute to the extraordinary Oregon wine story with our acclaimed Roads End Oregon Pinot Noir — which made the top ten in Wine Spectator reviewer Harvey Steiman’s Recommended Oregon Wines list.

In 2007 we opened our Carlton Cellars winery and tasting room, bottled the first public releases from our own estate grapes, inaugurated the Carlton Cellars Connoisseurs Club, and launched this all-new website, where we invite you to join us regularly as the story unfolds. In 2008 the momentum keeps building, as we expand our wine list with a new estate Pinot Noir (and keep a few more surprises in store).

Elevation, exposure and soil characteristics of vineyard:

Our land slopes gently southwest from an elevation of 550’ down to just under 500’. The vineyard was planted in Willakenzie soils, which are well-drained and course-grained ancient marine sedimentary soils.

Wine flavor profile:

Our vineyard produces deeply structured wines with a characteristic spicy minerality, along with aromatic and flavor components of dark fruit, tobacco, cola, and anise in our Pinot Noir; tropical fruit, pear, and apricot in our Pinot Gris.

Viticultural philosophies and practices:

While we are not currently certified as organic or biodynamic by any outside agency, we have a sustainable and eco-friendly farming philosophy, and use only natural farming methods in the vineyard. We carefully choose only certified organic sprays, and we never use systemic herbicides or pesticides.  We also use healthy compost, elemental preparations, compost teas, and other natural vineyard management methods so we can feel confident as our children and livestock roam and play in our vineyard.

Vineyards we purchase fruit from:

100% estate-grown fruit, with the exception of our proprietary white table blend.
